TRAINING DESCRIPTION:
Caregivers play a vital role in shaping youth attitudes, behaviors, and recovery outcomes related to substance use. This training expands on previous caregiver education efforts by providing updated, practical guidance to help caregivers understand the complex factors influencing youth substance use and to strengthen their ability to support recovery and resilience at home. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of youth substance use risk, the impact of stigma, the role of co-regulation skills, and the influence of family and life stress on youth well-being. The enhanced training also introduces new supplemental content focused on understanding medications for addiction treatment (MAT) and identifying key community and family resources to better support young people affected by substance use. Together, these elements equip caregivers with evidence-informed tools and strategies to foster open communication, reduce stigma, and promote healthy development and recovery among youth.
TRAINING OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to:
1. Identify at least two (2) key factors contributing to youth substance use risk and how caregiver understanding can influence prevention and recovery.
2. Describe at least two (2) ways to reduce stigma and strengthen supportive communication between caregivers and youth regarding substance use.
3. Demonstrate understanding of at least two (2) caregiver co-regulation and stress management strategies that promote healthy coping and emotional connection.
4. Recognize at least two (2) available resources, including medications for addiction treatment (MAT) and community-based supports, to assist families impacted by youth substance use.
